The Rolex GMT-Master, GMT meaning Greenwich Mean Time, was launched in 1954. When Rolex partnered up with Pan-Am’s Captain Frederick Libby, the two came up with the concept of adding another hour hand that revolves just once every twenty-four hours and has a rotatable bezel that is marked with the same 24 hours. In 1981, Rolex added a quick-set date feature to their 16750 model. Before the new model, the date would have to be changed by continuing to wind the crown through all the dates until the correct number was displaying. There has been three new models: ref 16710 (1983), the 50th Anniversary version in 2005 and ref 116710 LN (2007)
A completely redesigned GMT-Master II was introduced in 2005 for 50th Anniversary. The model came with a green dial and, later on, was available with a black dial. In 2006, a steel and yellow gold version was presented. Then, in 2007, the stainless-steel only version was released. The third version became a very popular and much sought-after item.
